Welcome to Hillel!
Hillel is a student organization created to welcome Jewish college students in intellectual, spiritual and social growth. Hillel helps students find a balance in being distinctively Jewish and universally human by encouraging them to pursue tzedek (social justice), tikkun olam (repairing the world) and Jewish learning, and to support Israel and the global Jewish peoplehood.
Hillel is a student driven service and social organization, on the campus of Old Dominion University. Hillel provides an opportunity for Jewish students, of all denominations, to come together for Jewish holidays and Shabbat, community work and fun.
Who participates in Hillel?
Hillel is open to Jewish Undergraduates and Graduates at Old Dominion University, yet it is also inclusive to non-Jewish students, who have a desire to learn more and be part of a Jewish student union.
Congratulations Freshman on your acceptance to Old Dominion! Hillel welcomes you to the ODU community.
Lunch and Learns
Bi-weekly opportunities for ODU students to get together during activity hour, and learn something new through discussion, activity, presentation, etc.
Alternative Spring Break
Hillel’s City Year Alternative Break is an amazing opportunity to engage students in the Jewish value of social justice, to help them explore questions that are important to them, and to connect Jewish students to others from their campus, and from across the country. Each trip will include 50 or 100 participants plus staff from Hillels who will come together to live, work and learn together.
During the week, students will work in groups to help communities in need. The work will include a mix of physical work to enrich the lives of the less fortunate, including light construction/painting to improve a local school or community center and direct service such as playing games, tutoring school children or volunteering with senior citizens. The amazing team at City Year is working diligently to craft our work schedules and we should have more information about specific work sites for January trips in October, and March trips in January.
In the late afternoons and evenings, participants will have opportunities to hear speakers and time to explore the city itself, and campus groups will meet for learning and reflection. Shabbat will be led by the students and celebrated as a group at the local Hillel. This unique opportunity to be with peers from one’s own campus as well as campuses across the country has always been a highlight for our students.

City Year is an amazing organization and we’re really excited to be in our second year partnering with such a positive force. The program is a year-long opportunity for people ages 18 to 24 to spend a year helping those in need. Corps members work directly with students in schools and also engage the communities by transforming physical spaces as well. Different work throughout a year may include, tutoring, mentoring, running after school programs, painting murals, building play spaces and renovating buildings.
Taglit Birthright Israel
“Taglit-Birthright Israel is a unique, historical partnership between the people of Israel through their government, local Jewish communities (North American Jewish Federations; Keren Hayesod; and The Jewish Agency for Israel), and leading Jewish philanthropists.
Taglit-Birthright Israel provides a gift of first time, peer group, educational trips to Israel for Jewish young adults ages 18 to 26.
Taglit-Birthright Israel's founders created this program to send tens of thousands of young Jewish adults from all over the world to Israel as a gift in order to diminish the growing division between Israel and Jewish communities around the world; to strengthen the sense of solidarity between Israeli youth and Jewish communities throughout the world; and to promote the idea of a trip to Israel for all Diaspora Jews as a critical part of Jewish life outside of Israel”.
